Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Omiga 3 is a spelling variant of omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) primarily consisting of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). They are widely used as dietary supplements and are also approved as prescription pharmaceutical products (such as Lovaza, Omacor, and Omtryg) for the treatment of severe hypertriglyceridemia and the reduction of cardiovascular risk. Omega-3 fatty acids exert their lipid-lowering and anti-inflammatory effects through multiple mechanisms, including activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR-alpha and PPAR-gamma) and free fatty acid receptors (FFAR4/GPR120 and FFAR1/GPR40), as well as inhibition of diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase (DGAT) and downregulation of sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBP-1c). In clinical trials, such as those conducted by Assiut University, "Omiga 3" has been utilized as a placebo comparator in studies evaluating other therapies (e.g., tadalafil) for lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
