Overview

Omega-3 fatty acids, primarily eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are being investigated by Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in a Phase 3 clinical trial (NCT01521845) for their potential to reduce periprocedural myocardial injury in patients with coronary arteriosclerosis undergoing elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The treatment aims to lower biomarkers of cardiac necrosis, such as CK-MB and Troponin I, and inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein (CRP). Mechanistically, these polyunsaturated fatty acids incorporate into cell membranes and modulate inflammatory pathways by competing with arachidonic acid for enzymatic conversion into pro-inflammatory mediators, thereby exerting cardioprotective and anti-inflammatory effects.
