This combination therapy consists of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and low-dose aspirin, investigated as a host response modulation therapy for the treatment of chronic periodontitis. Developed by researchers at October 6 University, the treatment aims to enhance the resolution of inflammation and promote periodontal regeneration, particularly in grade II furcation defects. Omega-3 fatty acids serve as precursors to specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs), while low-dose aspirin triggers the production of aspirin-triggered resolvins (AT-resolvins) through the acetylation of COX-2. This synergistic approach is designed to shift the periodontal environment from a pro-inflammatory state to a pro-resolving one, facilitating bone graft success and clinical attachment gain.
