Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This investigational combination therapy consists of high-dose omega-3 fatty acids and high-dose vitamin D (cholecalciferol), being evaluated in the POSEIDON clinical trial led by Dr. Rodolfo Alejandro at the Diabetes Research Institute, University of Miami. The approach utilizes nutritional supplementation to halt the progression of autoimmunity and preserve residual beta-cell function in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D). The mechanism of action involves the anti-inflammatory properties of omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines, and the immunomodulatory effects of vitamin D, which promote regulatory T cell activity and modulate Th1/Th17 immune responses. The therapy is being studied in both children and adults with either new-onset or established type 1 diabetes.
