Omega-3 fatty acids + cholecalciferol is an investigational nutritional combination therapy developed by the Azienda Ospedaliero Universitaria Maggiore della Carità for the treatment of newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in children. The intervention consists of high-dose omega-3 fatty acids (50-60 mg/kg/day of EPA and DHA) and vitamin D3 (1000 IU/day). The mechanism of action involves the suppression of autoimmune-mediated inflammation in the pancreatic islets and the preservation of residual beta-cell function, potentially extending the honeymoon period and reducing the daily insulin requirement. This approach was studied in collaboration with the Diabetes Research Institute in Miami and aims to evaluate whether nutritional supplementation can preserve endogenous insulin secretion following a T1DM diagnosis.
