Omega-3 fatty acids + eicosapentaenoic acid + docosahexaenoic acid is a marine-derived lipid mixture containing the long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). It acts primarily as an agonist of free fatty acid receptors (FFAR4/GPR120 and FFAR1/GPR40) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR-alpha and PPAR-gamma), which collectively modulate neuroinflammatory pathways, reduce oxidative stress, and alter neuronal membrane lipid composition. This nutraceutical supplement has been investigated by the Orygen Research Centre as an add-on therapy in Phase 3 clinical trials (such as the NEURAPRO and PURPOSE trials) for adolescents and young adults at ultra-high risk of psychosis, schizophrenia, and other psychotic disorders, though these trials did not demonstrate a significant reduction in transition rates to first-episode psychosis compared to placebo.
