Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Omega-3 fatty acids + gabapentin refers to a therapeutic comparison and potential combination regimen studied by Ain Shams University for the management of uremic pruritus in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Omega-3 fatty acids exert anti-inflammatory effects by competing with arachidonic acid, thereby reducing the production of pro-inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant that binds to the alpha-2/delta-1 subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels, which is thought to modulate the neuropathic components of uremic itch. In clinical trials, these agents have been evaluated for their ability to reduce itch severity, with omega-3 specifically showing a significant impact on systemic inflammatory markers associated with end-stage renal disease.
