Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Omega-3 fatty acids + inositol is a combination dietary supplement consisting of two naturally occurring compounds. Omega-3 fatty acids, primarily eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are polyunsaturated fats known for their anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. Inositol is a carbocyclic sugar that plays a role in cell signaling and neurotransmitter modulation. This combination has been studied as an adjunctive or alternative therapy for pediatric bipolar spectrum disorder, with evidence suggesting superior antimanic and antidepressant effects compared to either agent alone[1][2][4][6]. The proposed mechanisms include modulation of neuronal membrane fluidity, neurotransmitter signaling (including serotonin pathways), and possible mood-stabilizing effects. Both components are generally well-tolerated, but more research is needed to confirm efficacy across broader populations.
