omega-3 fatty acids + inositol + N-acetyl cysteine is a combination of natural supplements being evaluated by the Child Mind Institute for the treatment of emotional dysregulation in children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or non-verbal learning disability (NVLD). The intervention involves three distinct components: omega-3 fatty acids, which are believed to exert anti-inflammatory effects and modulate cell membrane fluidity; inositol, which acts as a precursor for the phosphatidylinositol second messenger signaling system; and N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), an antioxidant that serves as a precursor to glutathione and modulates glutamatergic neurotransmission. A 6-week open-label randomized clinical trial was conducted to compare the efficacy and tolerability of these agents in managing mood swings and emotional outbursts.
