Omega 3 fatty acids + plant sterol is a combination nutraceutical intervention developed by the Centre for Chronic Disease Control (CCDC) in India. It consists of plant sterols (typically 2 g/day) administered via a yoghurt drink and omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (EPA and DHA, typically 2 g/day) administered via fish oil capsules. The intervention is designed to manage dyslipidemia and reduce cardiovascular disease risk by targeting multiple lipid metabolism pathways. Plant sterols act by displacing dietary cholesterol from mixed micelles in the intestinal lumen and activating the liver X receptor (LXR), which regulates cholesterol efflux. Omega-3 fatty acids work primarily by inhibiting the synthesis of very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) and reducing serum triacylglycerol levels. Clinical research in Indian adults has shown that this combination significantly improves lipid profiles, specifically lowering LDL-C, non-HDL-C, and triacylglycerols while increasing HDL-C.
