It's approved for treating schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and as an adjunct therapy for major depressive disorder[5]. This is particularly notable given that quetiapine has 747 known drug interactions, including 147 major interactions[3]. Omega-3 fatty acids generally have minimal side effects compared to antipsychotics like quetiapine, which can cause significant metabolic effects including weight gain, elevated cholesterol, and increased risk of type 2 diabetes[7]. ## Potential Applications This combination may be particularly beneficial for: 1. Bipolar disorder patients with persistent symptoms despite conventional treatment 2. First-episode psychosis or ultra-high-risk patients, where omega-3's neuroprotective properties might be valuable 3. Patients experiencing metabolic side effects from quetiapine, as omega-3s may potentially help mitigate some of these effects The research suggests that omega-3 supplementation could be a valuable adjunctive therapy to conventional psychiatric medications like quetiapine, potentially improving efficacy while reducing side effects[4].
