Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Omega-3 fish oil is a dietary supplement derived from fatty fish that contains long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, specifically eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). In the context of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), these fatty acids are investigated for their potential to improve hepatic histological injury by modulating lipid metabolism and reducing inflammation. The University of Virginia conducted a Phase 2/3 randomized, placebo-controlled trial evaluating a 3,000 mg/day dose of omega-3 fish oil over 12 months. While the study did not meet its primary endpoint of significant reduction in the NASH Activity Score (NAS), it demonstrated significant fat reduction on image-assisted morphometry and reduced liver fat content by MRI in specific patient subgroups.
