Omega-3 nanoemulgel is a topical lipid-based formulation developed by researchers at Alexandria University, led by Dr. Basma M. Morsy. The formulation consists of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), specifically eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), derived from fish oil and delivered via a nanoemulsion-based hydrogel (nanoemulgel). It is primarily investigated for the prevention of radiation-induced oral mucositis in head and neck cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. The drug leverages the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound-healing properties of omega-3 fatty acids to reduce mucosal damage and severity of oral mucositis. Additionally, it has shown potential in regulating oral microbial dysbiosis, which is often associated with radiotherapy-induced complications.
