Overview

Omega-3 triglycerides are a form of omega-3 fatty acids in which the active components—primarily eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)—are esterified to a glycerol backbone as found naturally in fish oil. These essential polyunsaturated fats cannot be synthesized by the human body and must be obtained from dietary sources such as fatty fish or supplements. Omega-3 triglycerides lower plasma triglyceride levels by inhibiting hepatic synthesis of very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol and triglycerides. They also exert anti-inflammatory effects, reduce platelet aggregation, prolong bleeding time, and may have antiarrhythmic properties. Omega-3s are incorporated into cell membranes throughout the body and serve as precursors for bioactive lipid mediators involved in cardiovascular, immune, pulmonary, endocrine, retinal, and neural function[1][2][5][6]. The primary clinical indication is for lowering elevated blood triglyceride levels; they are also used for cardiovascular risk reduction and have been studied in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.
