**omega-conotoxin GVIA** is a 27-amino-acid peptide toxin derived from the venom of *Conus geographus*, a fish-hunting marine cone snail. It is a highly selective and potent antagonist of **N-type (CaV2.2) voltage-gated calcium channels**. By binding to these channels, it inhibits neurotransmitter release, especially in neuronal tissues, making it a valuable research tool in neurobiology and pain research. Unlike the clinically approved ω-conotoxin MVIIA (ziconotide), GVIA itself is primarily used for experimental and pharmacological studies and is not an approved therapeutic. Its mechanism of action is orthosteric blockade of neuronal N-type calcium channels, which are critical for synaptic transmission in the central and peripheral nervous system.
