Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Omega Oil Liniment is an over-the-counter topical analgesic formulation developed and manufactured by Kama Industries (a subsidiary of Aspen Pharmacare). It contains 60% w/w Gaultheria oil (methyl salicylate) as its active ingredient, along with excipients such as eucalyptol and camphor. Methyl salicylate acts as a counterirritant and is metabolized to salicylic acid, which inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes to reduce prostaglandin synthesis, thereby alleviating pain and inflammation. Additionally, it modulates transient receptor potential (TRP) channels, specifically activating TRPA1 and TRPV1, to induce a warming or cooling sensation that helps override pain signals. Omega Oil Liniment is indicated for the fast relief of muscular aches, sprains, and minor pains associated with rheumatism, lumbago, and sciatica.
