OmegaDoxy is an oral fixed-dose combination therapy consisting of the tetracycline antibiotic doxycycline and omega-3 fatty acids, specifically eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Developed by Hovione, the formulation is designed to treat inflammatory conditions such as papulopustular rosacea and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). The therapeutic rationale relies on the synergistic anti-inflammatory effects of its components: doxycycline acts as a potent inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and reduces the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, while omega-3 fatty acids serve as precursors to specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) and help stabilize the lipid layer of the tear film. By combining these agents, OmegaDoxy aims to improve clinical outcomes in skin and ocular inflammation while potentially allowing for lower, better-tolerated doses of the antibiotic component.
