Omegaven

Omegaven is an intravenous lipid emulsion containing a high concentration of omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), primarily eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), derived from fish oil. Developed and marketed by Fresenius Kabi, it is primarily indicated for parenteral nutrition in patients where oral or enteral nutrition is impossible, insufficient, or contraindicated. In clinical research conducted by Aalborg University Hospital, Omegaven has been investigated for its potential to reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death and ventricular arrhythmias, particularly in hemodialysis patients. The mechanism of action involves the rapid incorporation of n-3 PUFAs into myocardial cell membranes, which modulates the activity of various ion channels (such as sodium and calcium channels) and improves heart rate variability, thereby exerting an anti-arrhythmic effect and stabilizing cardiac electrical activity.
