Omeprazole is a small molecule pharmaceutical drug classified as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It is used to treat conditions involving excessive stomach acid production such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastric and duodenal ulcers, erosive esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (a rare condition with excess acid due to tumors), and for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection in combination with antibiotics. Omeprazole works by irreversibly inhibiting the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme system ("proton pump") on gastric parietal cells—the final step in gastric acid secretion—thereby reducing both basal and stimulated stomach acid output. The drug is available both over-the-counter and by prescription in various oral formulations.
