Overview

This is a quadruple therapy regimen combining a proton pump inhibitor (omeprazole), two antibiotics (amoxicillin and azithromycin), and bismuth subcitrate. It is used for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection. Omeprazole reduces gastric acid secretion to create a favorable environment for antibiotic action. Amoxicillin and azithromycin are broad-spectrum antibiotics targeting bacterial cell wall synthesis and protein synthesis, respectively. Bismuth subcitrate has antibacterial activity against H. pylori and may also protect the gastric mucosa[5][1]. The combination aims to overcome antibiotic resistance by using multiple agents with different mechanisms of action[5].
