Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This combination therapy, consisting of the proton pump inhibitor omeprazole and the antibiotics amoxicillin and metronidazole, is being investigated by Tabriz University for the treatment of idiopathic central serous chorioretinopathy (ICSCR). The therapeutic rationale is based on the hypothesis that *Helicobacter pylori* infection may play a role in the pathogenesis of ICSCR through immunologic or infectious processes. Omeprazole acts to reduce gastric acid secretion, which enhances the stability and efficacy of the co-administered antibiotics. Amoxicillin and metronidazole work synergistically to eradicate *H. pylori* infection. The clinical objective is to determine if the eradication of this bacterium promotes the resorption of subretinal fluid and leads to disease remission in patients with ICSCR.
