Overview
Omeprazole magnesium is the magnesium salt form of omeprazole, a substituted benzimidazole and selective proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It acts by irreversibly inhibiting the gastric parietal cell H+/K+ adenosine triphosphatase (proton pump), which is the final step in gastric acid production. This leads to a marked reduction in both basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion. Omeprazole magnesium is used for short-term treatment of active duodenal ulcers, eradication of Helicobacter pylori to reduce ulcer recurrence risk, treatment of benign gastric ulcers, symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis due to acid-mediated GERD, maintenance healing of erosive esophagitis, and pathologic hypersecretory conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The drug is available as delayed-release oral capsules or granules for suspension[4][5][6].
