Overview

Omiganan is a synthetic, linear, cationic peptide consisting of 12 amino acids and is an analog of indolicidin, a naturally occurring antimicrobial peptide from the cathelicidin family. It acts primarily by disrupting bacterial cytoplasmic membranes, leading to cell death. Omiganan exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria as well as fungi. It has also demonstrated immunomodulatory effects by enhancing interferon responses to endosomal TLR ligands in plasmacytoid dendritic cells. Developed mainly as a topical gel formulation, omiganan has been investigated for the prevention of catheter-related bloodstream infections and for dermatological conditions such as atopic dermatitis, acne vulgaris, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, condylomata acuminata (genital warts), vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia, bacteremia/fungemia associated with catheters, and bullous keratopathy[1][2][3][4][5][6][7].
