Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Omnilax is a macrogol-based osmotic laxative developed by Pro-Health Pharma Sweden AB for the treatment of functional constipation in adults and children aged 8 years and above. The active ingredient is Macrogol 4000 (polyethylene glycol 4000), a high molecular weight linear polymer that acts as an osmotic agent. When administered orally as a powder dissolved in water, it remains in the intestinal lumen and binds water molecules through hydrogen bonding. This increases the water content and volume of the stool, softening the feces and stimulating colonic motility to facilitate bowel movements. Omnilax is a generic small molecule medication that is not absorbed systemically or metabolized by the body, and it typically takes 24 to 48 hours to achieve a therapeutic effect.
