Omnivirol

Omnivirol is a topical broad-spectrum antiviral drug containing the active ingredient **AV2**, specifically developed for the treatment of cutaneous warts caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Unlike traditional ablative treatments such as salicylic acid or cryotherapy, which destroy the infected skin cells (keratinocytes), Omnivirol acts as a virucidal agent that directly deactivates HPV virions. By neutralizing the virus, it aims to prevent the infection of new cells and reduce the high recurrence rates typically associated with standard wart therapies. In clinical research, it is frequently evaluated in combination with salicylic acid to provide a dual mechanism: the antiviral deactivation of the virus paired with the chemical destruction of the physical lesion. The drug was developed by the Belgian biotech company **Viro-Bio**, a spin-off associated with researchers from the **University of Antwerp**.
