OMX-480P is an engineered, PEGylated heme-nitric oxide/oxygen binding (H-NOX) protein therapeutic developed by Omniox. It is designed as a high-affinity oxygen-delivery vehicle specifically engineered to penetrate and oxygenate hypoxic tissues, such as those found in the microenvironment of solid tumors. The H-NOX platform is derived from bacterial proteins but modified for human use to possess a high affinity for oxygen while exhibiting significantly reduced reactivity with nitric oxide (NO). This reduced NO reactivity is a critical design feature intended to prevent the systemic vasoconstriction and hypertension that historically limited the clinical utility of hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs). By delivering oxygen to hypoxic regions, OMX-480P aims to reverse hypoxia-mediated resistance to radiotherapy and chemotherapy, potentially improving treatment outcomes in oncology and other conditions characterized by pathological tissue hypoxia.
