Overview

OMX-based oxygen delivery vehicles are novel biotherapeutics engineered to deliver oxygen specifically to severely hypoxic tissues. Unlike traditional hemoglobin (Hb)-based carriers, these agents are derived from the H-NOX (heme-nitric oxide/oxygen binding) protein family and do not scavenge nitric oxide in the vasculature. Their engineered O2 affinity ensures that they release their cargo only under pathologic hypoxic conditions, minimizing risks of systemic side effects or excessive blood oxygenation. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that administration of OMX improves metabolic and hemodynamic outcomes and increases survival in animal models of hemorrhagic shock and acute myocardial hypoxia. The technology is being developed for potential applications in trauma (hemorrhagic shock), cardiovascular disease (myocardial ischemia), stroke, cancer, and as a general blood substitute[1][2][3][4][5][7].
