Overview

OnabotulinumtoxinA is a purified neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium *Clostridium botulinum*. It is classified as a botulinum toxin type A product and acts as an acetylcholine release inhibitor and neuromuscular blocking agent. OnabotulinumtoxinA works by blocking the presynaptic release of acetylcholine at neuromuscular junctions, resulting in temporary muscle paralysis or relaxation. This mechanism underlies its use in treating various conditions involving muscle overactivity, such as cervical dystonia, spasticity, blepharospasm, and strabismus. It also inhibits cholinergic transmission to sweat glands for hyperhidrosis treatment and modulates pain pathways for chronic migraine prevention. Cosmetically, it reduces dynamic wrinkles by relaxing targeted facial muscles[1][2][3][5].
