Overview

OnabotulinumtoxinA + lidocaine is a combination of two agents commonly used in clinical practice for both therapeutic and cosmetic procedures. OnabotulinumtoxinA is a purified neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum (botulinum toxin type A). It acts by inhibiting acetylcholine release at neuromuscular junctions, resulting in temporary muscle paralysis or relaxation. This mechanism underlies its use in treating conditions such as chronic migraine prophylaxis, upper and lower limb spasticity, cervical dystonia (neck muscle spasms), blepharospasm (eyelid spasms), strabismus (crossed eyes), overactive bladder with urinary incontinence due to neurological disease or idiopathic causes, severe axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), and various cosmetic indications including reduction of facial wrinkles[1][2][3][4][5]. Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that blocks sodium channels on neuronal cell membranes to prevent nerve impulse conduction; it provides rapid-onset local anesthesia during minor surgical procedures or injections. The combination may be used to reduce injection pain when administering onabotulinumtoxinA.
