Overview

OnabotulinumtoxinA reconstituted with bacteriostatic saline is a specific formulation of the botulinum neurotoxin type A (Botox) prepared using 0.9% sodium chloride containing benzyl alcohol as a preservative. This formulation was investigated by the State University of New York - Upstate Medical University in the B-RECON clinical trial for the treatment of chronic migraine. The primary objective of using bacteriostatic saline instead of standard preservative-free saline is to utilize the local anesthetic properties of benzyl alcohol to reduce the significant procedure-related pain associated with the standard 31-site injection protocol. OnabotulinumtoxinA works by cleaving SNAP-25, which inhibits the release of acetylcholine at neuromuscular junctions, thereby providing therapeutic relief for chronic migraine and other neuromuscular conditions.
