Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Onbax-R is a branded generic formulation of ondansetron, a potent and highly selective serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist. Marketed by Medicox Lifescience, an Indian pharmaceutical company, it is primarily used as an antiemetic to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery. Ondansetron works by blocking 5-HT3 receptors located both peripherally on vagal nerve terminals and centrally in the chemoreceptor trigger zone of the area postrema. By inhibiting these receptors, it prevents the initiation of the vomiting reflex. As an injectable formulation, Onbax-R provides a rapid onset of action and is particularly useful for patients who are unable to tolerate oral medications due to severe emesis.
