Overview

OncoCiDia is a necrosis-avid radiopharmaceutical developed by Oncocidia Limited, based on research from KU Leuven. It consists of the small molecule hypericin labeled with the radioisotope iodine-131. Unlike traditional targeted therapies that rely on specific molecular receptors, OncoCiDia utilizes a physical/biochemical necrosis-avidity mechanism to selectively accumulate in the necrotic core of solid tumors. Once localized, the iodine-131 delivers short-range beta radiation (approximately 1–3 mm) to destroy adjacent viable cancer cells that often survive initial treatments. It is designed as a theranostic agent, intended for use as an adjunct therapy following necrosis-inducing procedures such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA), high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), or cryotherapy to eliminate residual disease and prevent recurrence.
