OncoGel

OncoGel is a sustained-release, injectable formulation of paclitaxel designed for local intratumoral delivery. It utilizes the ReGel delivery system, a thermosensitive, biodegradable triblock copolymer (PLGA-PEG-PLGA) that exists as a liquid at room temperature but forms a water-insoluble gel depot upon injection into body tissues at physiological temperatures. This allows for the controlled, localized release of paclitaxel over several weeks, maximizing drug concentration at the tumor site while minimizing systemic toxicity. It was primarily investigated by Boston Scientific (via acquisition of BTG and Macromed) for the treatment of esophageal cancer and other solid tumors, often in combination with radiotherapy or chemoradiation.
