ondansetron

Ondansetron is a selective serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist used primarily to prevent nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery. It works by blocking the action of serotonin at 5-HT3 receptors both peripherally on vagal nerve terminals and centrally in the chemoreceptor trigger zone of the area postrema in the medulla. This inhibition prevents activation of the vomiting reflex triggered by chemotherapeutic agents or other stimuli. Ondansetron does not have significant activity at dopamine receptors and is considered highly specific for its target[1][2][5][6][7]. The drug was originally developed by Glaxo (now GSK) and is widely available as a generic medication.
