Overview

Ondansetron + betahistine is a combination of two small molecule drugs used primarily for the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), particularly in high-risk patients undergoing laparoscopic gynecological surgery. Ondansetron is a selective serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist that blocks the action of serotonin, a natural substance that may cause nausea and vomiting. Betahistine acts as a strong antagonist at histamine H3 receptors and as a weak agonist at H1 receptors, increasing vasodilation and microcirculation in the inner ear, which can help reduce dizziness. The combination has been shown to be more effective than ondansetron alone in reducing both PONV and dizziness after surgery[1][2][6].
