Overview
Ondansetron + dexamethasone is a fixed-dose combination of two pharmaceutical agents used primarily for the prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting. Ondansetron is a selective serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist that blocks serotonin both peripherally on vagal nerve terminals and centrally in the chemoreceptor trigger zone, thereby preventing emesis. Dexamethasone is a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid that binds to the glucocorticoid receptor, inhibiting pro-inflammatory signals and promoting anti-inflammatory effects. The combination has been shown to be more effective than either agent alone in reducing severe postoperative or chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting[1][2][4][5][8]. Both drugs are widely used as antiemetics in perioperative settings as well as for patients undergoing chemotherapy.
