Overview

Ondansetron is a selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist primarily used to manage nausea and vomiting associated with emetogenic cancer chemotherapy and surgery. Developed by Lincoln Pharmaceuticals as a nasal drug delivery system, this formulation is designed to provide a non-invasive alternative to intravenous administration and a more reliable option than oral dosing for patients suffering from active emesis. By targeting 5-HT3 receptors on the terminals of the vagus nerve in the periphery and within the area postrema of the central nervous system, ondansetron effectively blocks the serotonin-mediated signaling that triggers the vomiting reflex. The intranasal route potentially offers rapid absorption through the nasal mucosa, bypassing hepatic first-pass metabolism and improving patient compliance in acute settings.
