onercept

Onercept is a recombinant human soluble p55 tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor (sTNF-RI) that acts as a TNF-alpha antagonist. It functions by binding to circulating TNF-alpha, thereby preventing it from interacting with cell-surface TNF receptors and inhibiting the subsequent pro-inflammatory signaling cascade. Developed by Serono (now Merck KGaA), onercept was investigated for the treatment of various autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, including moderate to severe plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Despite reaching Phase III clinical trials for psoriasis, development was discontinued after the drug failed to demonstrate sufficient efficacy to warrant further pursuit in that indication.
