Overview

Ongericimab is a recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody that targets proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9). By binding to circulating PCSK9 and blocking its interaction with the LDL receptor on hepatocytes, ongericimab prevents LDL receptor degradation. This increases the number of LDL receptors available to clear low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) from the bloodstream. Ongericimab is administered subcutaneously and has demonstrated significant and sustained reductions in LDL-C levels—over 60% in clinical trials—as well as improvements in other lipid parameters such as non-HDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and total cholesterol. It is indicated as an add-on therapy for adults with primary hypercholesterolemia (non-familial) or mixed dyslipidemia who do not achieve target LDL-C levels despite optimized statin therapy. The drug was independently developed by Junshi Biosciences and approved by China’s NMPA in October 2024[1][3][4][5][6].
