Overview
Onligol is an osmotic laxative consisting of pure polyethylene glycol 4000 (macrogol 4000) without the addition of electrolytes or flavorings. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of chronic constipation and the resolution of fecal impaction, particularly in pediatric populations where palatability and compliance are critical. The mechanism of action involves the sequestration of water molecules through hydrogen bonding in the intestinal tract; this increases the osmotic pressure and water content of the stool, leading to softening of the fecal mass and an increase in volume that stimulates colonic motility. Unlike electrolyte-containing PEG formulations (such as Movicol), Onligol's electrolyte-free composition is designed to improve taste and reduce the risk of salt-related side effects. It has been evaluated in clinical trials sponsored by institutions like Azienda Policlinico Umberto I to compare its efficacy and tolerability against standard PEG-electrolyte solutions.
