Drug intelligence / Profile preview
On-Q (also written ON-Q) is a continuous wound infusion system, specifically the On-Q Pain Relief System, designed for postoperative pain management. It is a drug-device combination consisting of a disposable elastomeric pump that delivers a continuous infusion of bupivacaine, a long-acting local anesthetic, through thin catheters placed directly into or adjacent to a surgical wound. Bupivacaine acts as a voltage-gated sodium channel blocker, inhibiting the influx of sodium ions into nerve cells, which prevents the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses and results in localized anesthesia. Originally developed by I-Flow Corporation (now part of Avanos Medical), the On-Q system is used in various surgical settings, such as DIEP free flap breast reconstruction, to provide effective analgesia and reduce the reliance on systemic opioids.
