Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Onyx-18 is a non-adhesive liquid embolic agent developed for the permanent occlusion of vascular lesions, such as brain arteriovenous malformations (bAVMs), dural arteriovenous fistulas (dAVFs), and middle meningeal artery (MMA) lesions. It is composed of an ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), with micronized tantalum powder added to provide radiopacity for fluoroscopic visualization. Onyx-18 has a nominal viscosity of 18 centistokes (cSt), allowing it to travel distally and penetrate deeply into complex vascular networks. Upon contact with blood or aqueous bodily fluids, the DMSO solvent rapidly diffuses, causing the EVOH copolymer to precipitate in situ from the outside in, forming a spongy, coherent, and non-absorbable embolus that physically occludes the target vessel. Originally developed by Micro Therapeutics and subsequently acquired by ev3, Covidien, and Medtronic, Onyx-18 is widely used in interventional neuroradiology and peripheral vascular embolization.
