Overview

OP-1 Putty is a bone-graft substitute composed of recombinant human Osteogenic Protein-1 (rhOP-1), also known as Bone Morphogenetic Protein-7 (BMP-7), combined with a bovine-derived Type I collagen carrier. Developed by Stryker and later acquired by Olympus Biotech, the product was designed to induce bone formation in orthopedic applications. Its primary mechanism involves BMP-7 acting as a potent osteoinductive cytokine that binds to BMP receptors on mesenchymal stem cells, stimulating their differentiation into osteoblasts. The specific formulation "OP-1 Putty" was investigated for use in uninstrumented posterolateral fusion in patients with degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis, aiming to provide a safe and effective alternative to autologous bone graft. However, following the closure of Olympus Biotech in 2014, development and commercialization of the OP-1 product line were discontinued.
