Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Opalescence PF is a professional-grade, take-home dental whitening system developed and manufactured by Ultradent Products, Inc. The formulation is a sticky, viscous gel containing carbamide peroxide as the active bleaching agent, available in concentrations ranging from 10% to 45%. The "PF" designation refers to the inclusion of potassium nitrate and sodium fluoride; potassium nitrate acts as a desensitizing agent by penetrating the enamel and dentin to reach the pulp nerves, while fluoride helps to strengthen enamel and provide cavity protection. The gel is applied via custom-fitted dental trays, where the carbamide peroxide breaks down into hydrogen peroxide to oxidize and remove internal and external tooth stains. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of tooth discoloration caused by factors such as aging, tobacco use, and consumption of staining foods or beverages.
