Overview

OPC-249 is an inhaled formulation of calcitonin (also known as Calcitonin ODPI) developed by Otsuka Pharmaceutical for the treatment of pain due to osteoporosis. It is a calcitonin receptor agonist. As of February 2009, it was in Phase II trials in Japan. Development may have been impacted or discontinued following a 2012 European Medicines Agency recommendation regarding cancer risk associated with long-term calcitonin use.
