OPC-39436 is an orally bioavailable small molecule inhibitor of beta-site amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1), currently under development by Otsuka Pharmaceutical for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. BACE1 is the rate-limiting enzyme in the production of amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptides, which aggregate into neurotoxic plaques in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease. By inhibiting BACE1, OPC-39436 aims to reduce the levels of Aβ and potentially slow the progression of cognitive decline. The drug is being evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials, including studies in healthy elderly volunteers to assess safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics using a spray-dried tablet formulation designed to optimize bioavailability.
