Overview

OPC1 is an allogeneic cell therapy consisting of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) derived from pluripotent stem cells. It is being developed for the treatment of spinal cord injuries (SCI). The therapy aims to promote remyelination, provide trophic support to surviving neurons, and stimulate neurite outgrowth to restore function in patients with acute or chronic spinal cord injuries. Originally developed by Geron (as GRNOPC1), the program was acquired by Asterias Biotherapeutics (as AST-OPC1) and subsequently by Lineage Cell Therapeutics. The cells are designed to be transplanted directly into the site of the spinal cord injury, where they differentiate into mature oligodendrocytes to facilitate repair of the damaged neural tissue.
