OPF-310 is an encapsulated porcine islet cell therapy developed by Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory for the treatment of unstable Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. The product consists of pancreatic islets harvested from pathogen-free pigs, which are encapsulated in a biocompatible material to protect the xenogeneic cells from the recipient's immune system while allowing for the diffusion of glucose, oxygen, and insulin. This xenotransplantation approach aims to restore endogenous insulin production and physiological glycemic control in patients who experience severe, life-threatening hypoglycemic episodes despite intensive insulin therapy. By utilizing a porcine source, OPF-310 addresses the critical shortage of human donor islets available for transplantation.
