Overview

Ophiopogon japonicus root extract is a botanical extract derived from the roots of *Ophiopogon japonicus*, a perennial plant known as 'Maidong' in traditional Chinese medicine. The extract is rich in steroidal saponins, polysaccharides (fructosans), and homoisoflavonoids. It is primarily utilized in the cosmetic industry for its moisturizing and skin-barrier-enhancing properties, particularly in products designed for eczema-prone or sensitive skin. Pharmacological research has explored its potential anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-diabetic, and cardioprotective effects. One specific commercial form, AD-Resyl, is developed by SILAB for dermatological applications. It has also been investigated for its role in modulating the PI3K-AKT-mTOR/FoxO3a signaling pathway to treat obesity-associated skeletal muscle atrophy.
