Overview

Ophiopogon root is the tuberous root of *Ophiopogon japonicus*, a perennial herb native to East Asia and widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) under the names Mai Dong or Mai Men Dong (麦冬/麦门冬). It is primarily valued for its ability to nourish yin and promote body fluid production. In TCM practice it is prescribed to moisten the lungs and skin, ease the mind (calm shen), clear heart fire (reduce irritability), relieve dry coughs and constipation due to dryness or yin deficiency. Modern pharmacological studies have identified steroidal saponins, homoisoflavonoids and polysaccharides as key bioactive constituents responsible for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory and antidiabetic effects. It has demonstrated cardiovascular protection as well as potential benefits in respiratory conditions such as dry coughs or chronic bronchitis. Ophiopogon root is also used in functional foods and dietary supplements for hydration support and general wellness[1][6][8].
